#ThursdayNightFootball: Twitter wins streaming rights to Thursday Night Football

Twitter is trying their hand at the streaming game with news that they are partnering with the NFL to start streaming Thursday Night Football next season.

Twitter was rumored to be hosting the games in this upcoming season, but a press conference confirmed that social media site bought the rights to stream 10 Thursday Night Football games globally across devices. Amazon and Verizon were also in the running for the to secure streaming rights but were beat out for a price of just around $10 million for the 10 games.

In addition to the actual game, viewers will be able to watch pre-game and post-game broadcast via Periscope.

With Twitter being a large digital platform, where many gather to discuss games, TV shows, and movies, this is a good move by the NFL to extend their reach. Twitter is where live events unfold and is the right partner for the NFL as we take the latest step in serving fans around the world live NFL football”, said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The level of conversation during sporting events, particularly NFL events, will no doubt increase the viewership of Thursday Night Football. This will also attract news users to sign up for Twitter to view the games. Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey stated, “This is about transforming the fan experience with football. People watch NFL games with Twitter today. Now they’ll be able to watch right on Twitter Thursday nights.”

There hasn’t been any word on how the streams will be presented to viewers inside the app or how it will work in conjunction with their personal timeline. News on that will no doubt be available as we get closer to the 2016-2017 NFL season.
